Reverse NaNoWriMo: A Helpful Tool for Winning NaNoWriMo

Ok, so I’ve been thinking about how best to go about this NaNoWriMo thing, and during some research on the Internet, I came across a blog post titled “Reverse NaNoWriMo”.

What’s that, you ask?

“Reverse NaNoWriMo” serves as a way to combat the evils of NaNoWriMo burnout. (I must admit that I have expreienced that a number of times because I usually start stong, but end up getting weaker and weaker as the month rolls by. Plus, I’m alwasy scrambling to get my words written down and reach 50,000 words before NaNoWriMo ends.)

So, how do you get rid of NaNoWriMo burnout?

By writing backwards, of course!

Confused? This is how it works:

You start each day with a set amount of words. As the month goes, the word count gets smaller and smaller, until you reach Day 30, when you have to write only 1 word.

That’s right. You write one word at the end of NaNoWriMo.

Sweet, huh?

Now, let’s start at the beginning and work our way backward:

NaNoWriMo, Week 1
Day 1 – you will start with 3,346 words. (Don’t let that big number intimidate you; you can do it, you will do it, and you MUST do it!)
Day 2 – 3,216 words.
Day 3 – 3,101 words.
Day 4 – 2,986 words.
Day 5 – 2,872 words.
Day 6 – 2,757 words.
Day 7 – 2,642 words.
Total words written for Week 1 of NaNoWriMo: 20,920 words. (Now, wasn’t that so bad?)

NaNoWriMo, Week 2
Day 8 – 2,527 words. (This may be hard, but you can do it!)
Day 9 – 2,412 words.
Day 10 – 2,298 words.
Day 11 – 2,183 words.
Day 12 – 2,068 words.
Day 13 – 1,953 words. (getting there…)
Day 14 – 1,838 words. (so close…)
Total words written for Week 2 of NaNoWriMo: 15,979 words. (Add that number to week one and you would have written 36,899 words so far! Doesn’t that make you feel happy?)

NaNoWriMo, Week 3
Day 15 – 1,724 words. (Halfway day! By now, you have written 38,623 words, which is more than what most people have written so far! Had you kept to the 1,667 word-per-day schedule, you would have written 25,005 words around this day. That’s a difference of 13,618 words. So be proud that you’ve gotten this far.)
Day 16 – 1,609 words. (less than the average 1,667 daily word count.)
Day 17 – 1,494 words.
Day 18 – 1,379 words.
Day 19 – 1,264 words.
Day 20 – 1,150 words.
Day 21 – 1,035 words. (After this, it’s all smooth sailing!)
Total words written for Week 3 of NaNoWriMo: 9,655 words. (Add that to weeks 1 and 2 and you have written 46,554 words. You’re almost there!)

NaNoWriMo, Week 4 (The Home Stretch)
Day 22 – 920 words.
Day 23 – 805 words.
Day 24 – 690 words.
Day 25 – 576 words.
Day 26 – 461 words.
Day 27 – 346 words.
Day 28 – 231 words.
Total words written for Week 4 of NaNoWriMo: 4,029 words. (Add that to the last 3 weeks and you have written 50,583 words! You’re already a winner!)

NaNoWriMo, Week 5 (Well, it’s only the last 2 days in November, but the competition is still going. Don’t stop now!)
Day 29 – 116 words (so easy, you could do this in 5 minutes!)
Day 30 – 1 word. (last one, so make it count!)
Total words written for Week 5 of NaNoWriMo: 117 words.

So, let’s put it all together:

Week 1: 20,920
Week 2: 15,979
Week 3: 9,655
Week 4: 4,029
Week 5: 117
Total words written: 50,700
Total words written if you used the 1,667 word-per-day method: 50,010

As you can see, there’s a 690-word difference between the 1,667 word-per-day method and the reverse NaNoWriMo method. 690 words can make a difference between satisfaction and frustration.

Now you know.

I’ll be back tomorrow with the 1,667 word-per-day method of winning NaNoWriMo.
